Arachne was a young, talented girl who grew to become the most masterful weaver of her time, “greater than Athena herself”, as she often claimed.
The young girl didn’t realise that insulting the gods can only lead to tragedy, and, sure enough, her hubris came when Athena cursed her and transformed into a spider.
What Athena didn’t know, was that her brother Hermes had secretly impregnated his great love Arachne, who came to have thousands of children and millions of grandchildren.
According to the myth, it was no mutant spider that bit poor Peter Parker – but one of Hermes & Arachne’s descendants, giving him the girl’s magical weaving skills, and Hermes’ godly powers.
